A Sustainable Escape

Sustainability – a buzzword we hear constantly, what does it mean though? “the avoidance of the depletion of natural resources in order to maintain an ecological balance” . Well that sounds like the right thing to do……..but how???

We had a unique starting point, an old train wagon, made in 1936, used as a stores wagon since the 1970’s. It was a real diamond in the rough, but brimmed with original vintage features and materials that we could repurpose in the renovation and conversion. Retaining the original pitch pine roof with its character and history was key in achieving the look and feel we envisioned.

Linking the Wagon to our solar panels seemed the obvious first step to minimise our environmental footprint. Next installing a compost loo was next……a Natsol compact. An indoor solution that looks remarkably like a normal toilet, albeit a sleek, stainless steel one – with one crucial difference: it doesn’t flush!

Material choices were carefully considered to align with our eco-conscious ethos. The insulation is Thermafleece sheep's wool, offering superior thermal performance with natural origins. For the paints, we opted for breathable, natural, and locally sourced options from Edward Bulmer, ensuring a healthy indoor environment free from harmful chemicals. Even the smallest details contribute to the bigger picture: the mattress from John Ryan by Design is partially filled with wool, and our quilt and pillows from Baavet are entirely wool-filled.

When it comes to consumables, our commitment to sustainability continues. We prioritize local suppliers (a topic for another blog!), and/or refillable, eco-friendly products. This includes our natural cleaning products from Method, Purdy & Figg, Ecover, and, of course, plenty of good old water!

Why our commitment to being sustainable? Our fields have been transformed into a thriving rewilding site, we are part of the Rewilding Britain network. To create a brand new building, using new materials, packed with chemicals and unnecessarily draining resources would simply be at odds with the very essence of our surroundings – we just couldn't do it!

And so Wilding Wagon: an eco friendly, sustainably managed, couples’ escape. It's more than just a place to stay; it's an experience, a living testament to how mindful choices can create something truly special and in harmony with nature.

Why not come and experience it for yourself? We can't wait to welcome you to a unique blend of vintage charm and sustainable living, nestled in the heart of our rewilded landscape.
